WILDWOOD – The Ocean City High School boys basketball team made history under head coach John Bruno while winning a championship at the Boardwalk Basketball Classic Saturday afternoon.
The Raiders topped Shawnee, 54-41, in the tournament’s Ernie Troiano Sr. Memorial Boys Bracket title game to move to 7-0 on the season, marking the first time in Bruno’s 35 seasons as head coach that his team has begun a season with wins in its first seven games.
Ocean City jumped out to a 16-4 lead to start the game and led by nine at the half. Kori Segich poured in 22 of his game-high 28 points in the first half to pace the Raiders.
Ocean City extended its lead to double digits in the third quarter before Shawnee rallied to close to within seven midway through the fourth quarter. But a couple of key baskets by Segich and Charlie LaBarre and three free throws by Dylan Schlatter allowed the Raiders to pull away.
LaBarre and Schlatter each added 10 points for Ocean City.
Segich heads into the new year as one of the state’s top scorers. He’s averaging 26.1 points per outing through seven games.
Ryan Senft had 14 points for Shawnee (2-4).
Ocean City reached the bracket title game after a 74-41 win over Paulsboro on Friday.
The Raiders are next in action Wednesday when they host Middle Township in an important Cape-Atlantic American Conference game.
