WILDWOOD – The Wildwood High School girls basketball team features some very good shooters.
When they’re on, the Lady Warriors can be awfully tough to beat.
Gloucester Catholic found that out on Thursday.
Wildwood delivered 12 three-point field goals – making six of them in the opening quarter – and put the game away with a big run over the course of the third quarter in topping the Rams, 46-30, in a key Tri-County Conference Classic Division contest.
The win moves Wildwood to 10-3 overall, 4-0 in division games. Gloucester Catholic fell to 9-4, 2-1.
Wildwood sharpshooter Macie McCracken sank four three-pointers and scored 14 points in the opening quarter as the Lady Warriors raced out to a 20-4 lead. Rebecca Benichou and Sophia Wilber also each hit three-pointers in the opening stanza.
Gloucester Catholic closed to within 10 at the half behind a 14-8 edge in the second quarter, but Wildwood outscored the Rams 13-2 in the third quarter to put the game away. Benichou heated up in the third period, scoring 10 of her game-high 18 points in the frame.
McCracken finished with 17 points and Wilber added eight points and six assists.
Kaliah Sumlin did not score but provided eight rebounds and forced numerous Ram turnovers.
McCracken and Benichou combined for nine three-pointers.
Jahzara Green led Gloucester Catholic with 11 points.
The teams meet again at Gloucester Catholic on Feb. 8.
Wildwood and Gloucester Catholic shared the Classic Division title last season, with each team going 9-1 in division games after splitting their two games with each other.
