The Cape May Tech girls basketball team made history Monday evening, and did so in dramatic fashion.

Johanna Longstreet’s long jump shot from just inside the three-point line shortly before the buzzer gave the Lady Hawks a 59-57 victory over St. Joseph in a Cape-Atlantic League Playoff Tournament play-in game.

“We had been trying to get Johanna the ball on some earlier possessions for a shot and we just couldn’t do it but we finally did at the end when we really needed it,” Cape May Tech coach Dan Loesch said.

The victory was the Cape May Tech program’s first ever in a postseason game of any kind.

Longstreet, a senior, was in the game and contributed seven key points much because of foul trouble, as two Cape May Tech players had fouled out.

Longstreet took the shot from the left side, just in front of the Cape May Tech bench. She was mobbed by her teammates in celebration after the ball swished through the net.

The win helps lift the spirits of a school community that has been suffering recently, in the wake of an automobile accident that injured two of the school’s students.

“We’ve been through some adversity this year but games like that are what you play for,” Loesch said. “We went through a tough time recently, so to win a game that way … It was great to win a close game like that.

“The girls were resilient and they did a good job of keeping their heads in the game. It went back and forth the whole time. At one point we were up 12 and then at another point we were down eight and then we were going to overtime.”

Cape May Tech (8-11), the 15th seed in the tournament, will now play No. 2 Wildwood Catholic on Wednesday in the Round of 16.

Anna Delaney led Cape May Tech with 20 points and eight rebounds. She made five three-point shots. Amanda Daino added 16 points and eight rebounds and Emma Drumm chipped in 12 points and five steals.

“The girls were super excited,” Loesch said. “It was a tough game. We were in foul trouble the whole game so our bench played a huge part for us. It was a complete team effort.”
