Two from county are Phillies Home Run Derby finalists

Two Cape May County youth baseball players will get the chance to take the field at Citizens Bank Park this weekend.

Gavin McDonnell of Middle Township and Carter Conway of Lower Township were each champions in both local and regional Phillies Home Run Derby contests earlier this summer. They’ll get the opportunity to compete in the finals of the competition this Saturday prior to the Phillies game against the Atlanta Braves.

During each contest, batters are given one practice swing and 10 competition swings from a pitching machine. They are awarded points for each swing and the distance of each hit, with those distances differing by age group.

McDonnell was the local and regional champion for the 11- and 12-year-old boys division while Conway was the local and regional champion for the 9- and 10-year-old boys division.

The local and regional Phillies Home Run Derby competitions were hosted by the Middle Township Baseball-Softball Association.
