WILDWOOD – The Lower Cape May Regional boys team and the Wildwood girls team were each winners, while the Wildwood boys team suffered a lopsided defeat during Friday’s play at the Boardwalk Basketball Classic at the Wildwoods Convention Center.

LOWER CAPE MAY A BIG WINNER OVER CUMBERLAND

Ty Bonner carved up the zone defense played by Cumberland in the first round of the Bernie McCracken Memorial Bracket.

The Lower Cape May junior guard found the soft spot against the Colts’ defense along the baseline and erupted for 22 points in the first half – en route to a game-high 27 – as the Caper Tigers rolled to a 71-40 victory.

Bonner made numerous six-to 10-foot jump shots along the baseline in the opening half. Then, when the defense adjusted to his presence in that area in the second half, he consistently delivered precise passes to teammates.

The result was three of his teammates also reaching double figures in the win as Mason Cronin and Ryan Mallon each netted 14 points and John Fernandez chipped in 11 points for Lower (2-2), which will play Fair Lawn in the bracket title game Saturday evening. That game will be broadcast live on the Cape Atlantic Live YouTube channel and Facebook page.

WILDWOOD GIRLS SHOOT PAST CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH

Wildwood, one of the smallest public high schools in the state with an enrollment of less than 300 students, used a solid first half to establish a double-digit lead and finished with a 64-45 win over Central Bucks South (Pa.), a school with an enrollment of more than 1,700 students.

The Lady Warriors sank seven three-pointers in the first half and went into the break with a 33-19 lead. Wildwood (4-0) upped its advantage to as high as 22 points in the second half before settling for the 19-point victory.

Macie McCracken poured in 27 points, grabbed seven rebounds and picked up four steals to lead Wildwood. Angie Wilber added 16 points, five rebounds and five assists and Rebecca Benichou chipped in nine points.

Wildwood will face Wildwood Catholic Sunday at the Boardwalk Classic.
