Crest Memorial, Margaret Mace win Optimist tournament championships

NORTH WILDWOOD – Crest Memorial won the boys championship and Margaret Mace took home the girls championship at the George A. D’Amico Memorial Grammar School Basketball Tournament Sunday.

The event is sponsored by the Optimist Club of the Wildwoods, which hosts the tournament at the North Wildwood Recreation Center to raise funds for its various charitable endeavors.

Crest Memorial topped Ocean City in the boys title game, 41-33. Michael Sciarra (14 points), Matthew Maher (11 points) and Levi Sheppard (10 points) each scored in double figures for Crest Memorial. Cory Clemens sank 13 points and J.R. Dinsmore added 11 for Ocean City.

Crest Memorial finished off an unbeaten season with the victory.

Margaret Mace won a thrilling girls title game over Upper Township, 35-34, on Maddie Kimmerle’s layup with five seconds remaining. Sabrin Fathi netted 13 points and Aubrey Bradway added 10 points to lead the winners in scoring. Upper Township got a game-high 21 points from Mya Dever.

Margaret Mace lost just one game all season.

Crest Memorial’s Owen Bannon and Margaret Mace’s Bradway were given the respective boys and girls tournament Most Valuable Player awards. Ocean City’s Clemens and Upper’s Dever were awarded the tournament’s sportsmanship awards.

The tournament included eight boys teams and eight girls teams.
