WILDWOOD – A Wildwood High School baseball team that struggled at the season’s outset is showing signs of improvement.
The Warriors won games on consecutive days late this week, edging Buena, 3-2, on Thursday and holding off a late rally by Pleasantville, 9-7, on Friday. The results improved Wildwood’s record to 3-5, giving the team wins in three of its last five games.
The win over Pleasantville got a bit uncomfortable for Wildwood in the top of the seventh inning. Ahead 9-3 going into the inning, the Warriors committed three errors and Pleasantville poked four hits to spark a rally. But a line out to third baseman Broc Denke with a runner on second base ended the contest.
Brian Cunniff pitched a complete game for the win, conceding just one walk and two earned runs along the way. He threw a very efficient 68 pitches through six innings before throwing more than 30 in the final frame.
Denke sparked the offense with a double, triple, a run scored and an RBI. His RBI triple in the sixth inning landed only a foot or two in front of the fence in left-center field.
Trevor Troiano hit an RBI double and scored two runs and Nolan Mawhinney’s RBI bunt single was the key play in a six-run second inning. Mawhinney also added another single.
Gianni Troiano chipped in an RBI hit.
Against Buena, Trevor Troiano tossed a five-hit complete game and also went 2 for 2 with a run scored. Gianni Troiano and Michael McWade both had RBI singles.
Wildwood is fielding a rather young team this spring. Cunniff, Denke and R.J. Blanda are the team’s lone seniors. The Warriors regularly start three sophomores and a freshman, with another sophomore and three juniors seeing regular playing time.
Wildwood is not scheduled to play during its spring break. The Warriors are next in action Tuesday, April 29, against Wildwood Catholic.
