Two players who’ve been an integral part of the recent success of the Middle Township High School girls basketball program have each committed to play college basketball.

Seniors Reagen Powell and Abbey Cappelletti recently announced their decisions to play at a pair of Division II schools – Powell at Caldwell University and Cappelletti at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania-Mansfield.

Powell emerged as one of the best players in the Cape-Atlantic League last season. The 5-11 small forward averaged 16.6 points and 5.9 rebounds in leading Middle to a 27-6 record en route to capturing the CAL playoff tournament championship and the team’s third straight South Jersey Group II title.

Powell, who enters this season needing 159 points to reach 1,000 for her career, will join a Caldwell team that competes in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Caldwell went 17-13 overall last season and is off to a 3-1 start this season through Monday.

Caldwell is located in Essex County, less than 20 miles west of New York City.

Cappelletti is Middle Township’s starting point guard. Last season, the 5-5 guard averaged 7.1 points and 2.0 assists while making a team-best 47 three-pointers.

A two-sport standout at Middle, Cappelletti had also been receiving college interest for field hockey but ultimately has chosen to continue her athletic career in basketball. She’ll join a Mansfield team that is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Mountaineers went 10-17 overall last season and are 1-3 so far this season through Monday.

Mansfield is located in north central Pennsylvania.

Powell and Cappelletti each signed a National Letter of Intent on separate days earlier this month.
