CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The Middle Township High School boys basketball team is about to find out if its difficult non-league schedule will pay off.
The Panthers scheduled some of the top teams around the state during the regular season in the hopes the experience would make them battle tested for when they got deep into the state playoffs.
Now, following Saturday’s dominating 79-53 win over Sterling, Middle will take to the road to face top-seeded Haddonfield Tuesday in a South Jersey Group II semifinal.
“We love this opportunity,” Middle coach LaMarr Greer said. “We prepared for this. This is why we went to Elizabeth and we went to Roselle Catholic and we played St. Joe-Metuchen. That’s why the schedule is the way it is.
“We have all the respect in the world for Haddonfield and what they do. We respect their tradition. But we think we’re prepared to be able to go there and play well.”
ALEX DANIEL: 25 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists
Middle’s offense was on point against the No. 12 Silver Knights. Sterling hung tight for 1 ½ quarters before the fourth-seeded Panthers surged to take an eight-point lead at the half. Middle then dominated the second half, opening its lead to 20 points by early in the fourth quarter.
The Panthers, playing in their final home game of the season, used terrific balance in their attack. Alex Daniel poured in 25 points and added nine rebounds and five assists to lead Middle. Chase Moore flirted with a triple-double, posting 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. And Kanye Perkins and Mason Murawski were also each in double figures with 14 points. Perkins and Murawski also brought the crowd to its feet with dunks, Perkins through the middle of the lane off a feed from Moore in the first half and Murawski on a fast break after a steal in the second half.
“I’m a product of Europe, so to me, good basketball is moving it around and sharing it, not having one person dominating the ball,” said Greer, referring to his playing days as a professional overseas. “To me, that’s the right way to play. Guys are buying into it at the right time of the year. We’ll see if we can take that with us to Haddonfield. It’ll be the ultimate test.”
