ERMA – Efficient offense and excellent defense helped the Lower Cape May Regional High School girls basketball team pick up a much-needed victory Thursday evening, as the Lady Tigers began the new year with a 56-24 result over county rival Cape May Tech.

“We needed this a lot,” Lower coach Scott Douglass said. “We’ve been struggling to score points, so to get 56 was nice.”

Lower went out to a 13-5 lead after the first quarter and was ahead 24-10 at the half.

The Lady Tigers (2-4), who stopped a three-game losing streak with the win, had three players reach double figures in scoring. Sophomore forward Brooke Robinson, the team’s leading scorer through six games, posted 15 points, while senior forward Alex Vogt and sophomore guard Savannah Wareham each added 14 points.

“It was good for some girls to step up,” Douglass said. “We had some other girls put points up for us. Savannah got some points and Alex was in double figures. That’s good to see.”

The return to the lineup of Olivia Lewis and Ainsley Reed has helped Lower Cape May’s depth.

“I think one of the big differences for us is that we made the extra pass tonight,” Douglass said. “The girls did well moving the ball.”

The Lower Cape May defense held Cape May Tech to just six field goals for the game, three in each half.

Amanda Daino scored nine points to lead Cape May Tech (2-5).
