WILDWOOD – The Wildwood High School boys soccer team took advantage of a loss of composure by an opposing player Wednesday afternoon.
A tricky free kick by Angel DeJesus from 23 yards away bounced off the diving goalkeeper’s hands and spilled across the goal line halfway through the first period of extra time as the Warriors downed 10-player Clayton, 2-1.
Wildwood played a man up from the final 15 minutes of the opening half after a Clayton player was sent off for a second yellow card for dissent after picking up an initial booking in a clash with a Warrior player.
Wildwood held a 1-0 lead at the time of the Clayton player’s dismissal thanks to a goal by Alex Polemic early in the contest. But Clayton equalized while a man down later in the half when Jaiden Keller punished an unorganized Warrior defense by scoring after a restart, the ball falling to an unmarked Keller at the far post.
Wildwood went on to control most of the second half without seeing any reward. The Warriors best second-half chance came on a shot from 12 yards that rang off the crossbar.
But with a draw looming, DeJesus instead gave his team the full result with his well struck free kick that found its way across the line in extra time.
Wildwood (4-3), which won its third straight and for the fourth time in five games, moved into second place in the Tri-County Conference Classic Division with the victory, taking its division record to 4-1. Clayton dropped to 5-3 overall, 3-2 in TCC Classic games.
