WILDWOOD – The cross country teams from Ocean City High School are good enough to win just about anywhere. Putting them on a course similar to the one they run at home makes them virtually unbeatable.
The Raider boys and girls teams easily ran to victory at the Cape May County Cross Country Championships Wednesday. A good portion of the meet was held on the Wildwoods Boardwalk, with the rest a detoured route on the Wildwood Crest Bike Path after flooding from the storm earlier this week left the beach unnavigable for runners.
Ocean City’s home meets include a portion of its town’s boardwalk.
Riley Tolson led the Raiders’ effort in the girls race. The OCHS sophomore posted a time of 18 minutes, 49 seconds to place first by approximately 16 seconds. She led a Raider contingent that earned seven of the first eight places.
Ocean City runners Carly Godfrey (19:05) and Lillian Flora (19:16) were second and third, respectively, before Middle Township’s Olivia Orton broke up the Raider pack with a fourth-place finish in 19:28. The Raiders then took the next four places behind Isabelle Edwards (19:46), Bella Cera (19:53), Gabby Henry (19:54) and Peighton Clemens (20:42).
Middle Township’s Eden Geisel (21:46) and Cape May Tech’s Kirstyn McHale (22:17) rounded out the top 10.
Ocean City posted 17 points to win the team scoring, followed by Middle (61), Wildwood Catholic (80), Lower Cape May (102) and Cape May Tech (115). Wildwood did not have enough runners to score as a team.
In the boys meet, Ocean City’s Erik Preisner edged teammate Nathan Aschmann for first place, Preisner finishing in 16:06.54 to Aschmann’s 16:06.95. The Raiders’ Michael Romano was third in 16:11 before Middle Township’s Jamar Mack broke up the winners’ pack with a fourth-place effort in 16:14. Fifth through eighth places went to Ocean City’s Kennan Neuman (16:43), Ben McCarthy (16:51), Hayden Tarves (17:22) and Ryan Jefferson (17:31).
Middle’s Champion McNeal (18:00.70) was ninth and Cape May Tech’s Evan Feliciano (18:00.98) placed 10th.
Ocean City recorded 17 points to win the boys team scoring, with Middle Township (51), Cape May Tech (86) and Lower Cape May (102) following. Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic each did not have the required runners to score as a team.
