VIDEO, PHOTOS: Gloucester Catholic trips WCA in extra time

STONE HARBOR – The Wildwood Catholic Academy girls soccer team had its season ended in cruel fashion Wednesday afternoon.

The Crusaders, seeded fourth in the South Jersey Non-Public B Tournament, were stunned when No. 5 Gloucester Catholic punched the ball through a herd of players into goal late in the first period of extra time. The result of the play made a 2-1 winner of the Rams, who will move on to meet top-seeded Rutgers Prep in the next round.

Wildwood Catholic opened the scoring early in the second half when Dani Daley ran onto a ball played to the right flank by teammate Madeline Burns and blasted a shot inside the far left post. Gloucester Catholic cancelled out Daley’s opener not long thereafter when a tricky long ball played by Olivia Pisano danced in the wind and took a high bounce before settling into the back of the net.

Daley had a good chance saved by Gloucester Catholic goalkeeper Lauren Norolewski early in the first period of extra time. Wildwood Catholic goalkeeper Sophia Lutz also made a key save on a mini breakaway by a Ram player in the period.

But the Rams (11-4-1) ended the proceedings when a corner kick chance fell to the foot of Alexa Battaglia, who finished from eight yards out.

Wildwood Catholic ends the season at 12-3. The Crusaders were the Cape-Atlantic American Conference champions.

Daley, a sophomore, ended the season as one of the top goal scorers in the state. She recorded 38 goals this season and has 70 for her career.
