WILDWOOD – The Lower Cape May Regional High School girls basketball team enjoyed their short trips to the Wildwoods Convention to play a pair of games at the Boardwalk Basketball Classic this week.
The Lady Tigers picked up a pair of victories, the latest a 42-27 decision over Delsea on Wednesday. That came a day after the team erased a seven-point deficit late in the third quarter to win, 41-33, over Hammonton.
Lower, which finished 11-11 last season, has won four of its first five games and looks like a real contender in the Cape-Atlantic United Conference.
“I’m very pleased with our start,” Lower coach Scott Douglass said. “The schedule’s helped a little bit but we have played some pretty decent teams, too. It’s been a good start for us.”
Against Delsea, senior Hailey Elwell helped Lower grab an early lead by making four of her five three-pointers in the first half. She finished with a game-high 18 points. Brooke Robinson, just a freshman, added 12 points and senior point guard Kaitlyn McGuigan chipped in eight points while also handling Delsea’s pressure defense with efficiency.
“One of the big things for us is that we’re handling adversity,” Douglass said. “We got down seven against Hammonton and came back. Last year, we wouldn’t have won that game. But this group knows they can come back and they did.”
Douglass sees some improvements in many of the players, which has helped lead to the good start.
“We’re shooting a little better and we’re handling the ball a little better,” he said. “The girls put the time in to get better and it’s showing.”
Lower next plays Wednesday at home against Cape May Tech.
