WILDWOOD – A large, near-sellout crowd turned out for a special evening in the Wildwood High School gymnasium Thursday.
They were there to see star senior Macie McCracken surpass a pair of significant milestones, and they were also hoping the Lady Warriors could pull off an upset victory over one of the best teams in South Jersey.
They got their wish on one end, but not the other. McCracken became just the fourth girls basketball player in Cape May County history to surpass 2,0000 career points and the first in county history to eclipse 300 career three-pointers when she passed both milestones in the first quarter.
But while the energy in the gym certainly gave the Lady Warriors a boost in the first half, the athleticism and size of Gloucester Catholic eventually dominated the proceedings as the Rams rolled to a 70-41 victory.
Needing just one point to reach the 2,000-point barrier, McCracken sank a free throw to reach the milestone early in the game. The contest was stopped for a short ceremony that included her teammates, coaches, family and other school community members.
McCracken joins her older sister, Maddie, a 2019 Wildwood graduate (2,001 points); 2015 Lower Cape May graduate Lauren Holden (2,476 points); and 2002 Wildwood graduate and South Jersey all-time scoring leader Monica Johnson (3,173 points) as the only players from Cape May County to hit the 2,000-point barrier. Maddie McCracken and Johnson were both in attendance at the game. McCracken’s other older sister, Mackenzie, a 2017 Wildwood graduate who scored well over 1,500 career points, was also present.
A few possessions after scoring her 2,000th point, McCracken knocked down a shot from beyond the top of the key for her 300th career three-pointer.
McCracken finished with 19 points in the game, putting her career total at 2,018 points. She is the 33rd player in South Jersey girls basketball history to reach 2,000 career points.
Rebecca Benichou added 14 points for Wildwood (8-2) in the loss.
Amanda Eggers scored 21 points and Jalyn Moore added 20 points for Gloucester Catholic (9-1), which is unbeaten against New Jersey competition.
