CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Abbey Cappelletti did a little bit of everything for the Middle Township High School girls basketball team Monday evening.

The senior guard performed most of the ball-handling duties, made critical outside shots and helped hold the opponent’s leading scorer to 13 points below her scoring average as the Lady Panthers posted a 52-35 victory over Wildwood Catholic Academy in a key Cape-Atlantic American Conference game.

Middle ran its record to 10-0 overall, 4-0 in conference games. Middle is currently the lone unbeaten team in the conference.

“It feels really good,” Cappelletti said. “It’s good to get that win.”

Cappelletti made three straight three-pointers in the first half to help Middle build a 25-15 lead at the break. She was also the primary defender on Wildwood Catholic sophomore standout Dani Daley, who finished with eight points. Daley entered the game averaging more than 21 points per contest.

“We spent the weekend really planning for this game,” Cappelletti said. “Dani, Lily (King) and Demiya (Carter) are their three main players and we had to make sure they didn’t do what they normally do. We knew if we could do that, it would help us win.

“I think we really stuck to our game plan and our execution was good. We did what we were told by the coaches. We were patient on offense and we let the game come to us.”

Cappelletti, who finished with 14 points, wasn’t the only standout for Middle. Senior Reagen Powell finished with a game-high 17 points, scoring her 1,000th career point on her first field goal of the fourth quarter. She also added eight rebounds.

Powell is the 18th girls basketball player at Middle to reach 1,000 career points.

“Her getting her 1,000th point in a game like this was great,” Cappelletti said. “I’m super proud of her because she’s worked so hard. We’re all really happy for her to get it.”

Sarah Farrow added seven points, nine rebounds and three assists for Middle despite seeing less playing time than usual due to an ankle injury. Mya Robinson chipped in six points. Hannah O’Neill and Ainsley Frederick each hit three-pointers for Middle, which made eight such shots for the game.

After establishing its 10-point lead at the break, Middle took control by outscoring the Crusaders by a 13-9 margin in the third quarter. The Lady Panthers then upped their lead to as many as 19 points in the fourth.

Carter led Wildwood Catholic (8-2, 4-1) with 15 points.

Middle snapped a five-game losing streak to the Crusaders with the victory.

The teams are scheduled to meet again on Jan. 30 at Wildwood Catholic.
