When high school basketball players in the position of reaching a significant milestone are asked about their impending accomplishment, they usually say they’re not thinking about the situation.

Most of them are lying.

But senior Angela Wilber of the Wildwood High School girls basketball team has no problem telling the truth.

“It’s been on my mind like every second, every day,” she said with a laugh.

Wilber, a 5-2 senior guard, enters Tuesday’s game at Pitman only 15 points shy of 1,000 for her career. She’s also one three-pointer away from 200 for her career.

The weight of the approaching milestones has been a little difficult to bear, Wilber admitted.

Even though she’s averaging 12.4 points per game this season, Wilber feels she has been struggling with her shot.

“In the games, my shots are not falling right row and I really think it’s because I’m thinking about everything too much,” she said. “But my coaches help calm me down and the team is working well together with all the passing, so I’m scoring in other ways, like layups.”

But now that she’s on the cusp of surpassing both accomplishments, Wilber feels a sense of pride about having the opportunity to have her name appear on the 1,000-point board mounted on the north wall of Wildwood’s gymnasium.

“It would mean the world to be up there,” she said. “It’s something I never thought I’d be able to do, even up to my sophomore year. Just to be close to it, I’m proud of myself.”

Wilber is on pace to become the 13th girls basketball player at Wildwood High School to reach 1,000 career points. She’ll be the shortest in terms of height. Her impact on the program, however, has been massive.

Wilber has been a major contributor to a Lady Warrior program that has experienced lots of success over her career. Wildwood has appeared in the South Jersey Group I championship game in each of her previous three seasons in the program, winning the title in 2024.

Wilber was a key bench player as a freshman, before becoming entrenched as a starter the following season. She later made the transition from shooting guard to point guard, taking over those duties last season as a junior following the graduation of her older sister, Sophia.

Wilber averaged in double figures in scoring as a sophomore and junior.

Currently, Wilber and the Lady Warriors appear to be rounding into form. They enter Tuesday’s game at Pitman at 10-4 and are owners of a six-game winning streak. The team is again a South Jersey title contender and is also in the driver’s seat for the Tri-County Classic Division championship.

With this being her final season in a Wildwood uniform, Wilber is appreciating every practice and every game.

“I’m definitely just trying to live in the moment when I’m on the court,” Wilber said. “I know these are my last moments on the court here at Wildwood. I love playing basketball and it’s definitely something I’m going to miss. I’m trying to make the most of it and have fun.”
