WILDWOOD – The Wildwood High School girls basketball team is heading back to a very familiar place.

The Lady Warriors will compete in the South Jersey Group I title game for the seventh straight time after a convincing 55-26 victory over Audubon in the Lady Warriors’ final home game of the season in the sectional semifinal round Tuesday evening.

Technically, Wildwood’s run of reaching the sectional championship game is seven times in eight seasons but the state tournament was not held in 2020-21, when the season was shortened due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Wildwood (22-7), the No. 2 seed in the bracket, will face top-seeded Haddon Township in the final for the second straight year on Saturday at a time to be determined. Haddon Township was a 43-34 winner over Glassboro in its semifinal game. Haddon Township beat Wildwood in last season’s game.

Wildwood and Audubon conducted a back-and-forth affair in the first quarter, and the game was tied at 12-12 at the close of the period.

Shortly thereafter, Wildwood erupted.

Senior guard Angie Wilber hit three three-pointers and junior forward Addison Troiano sank one to highlight a big run as Wildwood blitzed Audubon 20-2 in the period to take an 18-point lead into halftime.

Audubon responded with a strong surge at the start of the third quarter and cut Wildwood’s lead to nine points midway through the period, but Wildwood junior forward Joelle Murphy sank a three-pointer from the top of the key to increase Wildwood’s lead to 12 points. The Lady Warriors took their lead to 14 points at the close of the quarter.

Wildwood eventually swelled its advantage to 25 points in the fourth quarter before settling for the 19-point victory.

Wildwood enjoyed remarkable scoring balance in the victory. Murphy, using her size to dominate around the basket, led the team with 14 points. Wilber and sophomore guard Laila Fathi each added 11 points. Troiano sank eight points and junior guard Rebecca Benichou added seven points.

Emma Speyerer led third-seeded Audubon (20-9) with 13 points. The Green Wave made just 13 field goals in the game.

Wildwood has won the championship in two of its six appearances in the title game over the recent stretch. The program is 11-6 overall in South Jersey championship games.

Wildwood has won at least 20 games in eight of the last nine seasons, the lone exception being the COVID-shortened 2021 season when the team played just 15 games.
