WILDWOOD – Tommy Yarson pitched the Middle Township High School baseball team to a victory over one of the Cape-Atlantic National Conference’s top teams Tuesday afternoon,
The junior right-hander tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout and Middle used some small ball to generate just enough offense to post a 2-0 win over Buena.
Yarson struck out three and walked just two in the win.
Middle (4-9 overall, 2-7 CAL National) scored the opening run in the second inning. Joe Eisele and Gavin McDonnell each singled and moved to second and third base on a sacrifice bunt by Tommy Phillips. Eisele later scored on a wild pitch.
The Panthers got an insurance run in the fifth when Nick Matteucci’s sacrifice fly to center field plated Jerry Booth, who had reached on an error and advanced to third on a passed ball.
McDonnell had two hits for Middle.
Buena, which had a five-game winning streak snapped with the loss, fell to 10-4, 6-3.
The game was played at Maxwell Field in Wildwood. Middle does not have a home field this spring due to extensive renovations at Dougherty Field at the Davies Sports Complex. Middle has played two of its home games at Maxwell Field, with a third scheduled for May 9 against Southern Regional.
