One of the Cape-Atlantic League’s and South Jersey’s most high-profile boys basketball programs is now seeking a new head coach.

LaMarr Greer has stepped down at Middle Township High School, amid wide speculation that he’s about to accept a coaching job at the college level.

The school released a statement Tuesday morning confirming Greer’s resignation from both his coaching post and position within the school’s faculty but the statement did not mention his next destination.

Coach Greer's impact extended far beyond the court, as he carried the same intensity, discipline and high expectations into the classroom and throughout our school culture,” Middle Township principal Dr. Sharon Rementer said in a statement posted to the school’s athletics Facebook page. “He has been a mentor, role model and source of inspiration for countless students, consistently demonstrating what it means to pursue excellence with purpose.”

Greer, a 1994 graduate of Middle, led his alma mater’s boys basketball team for the past five seasons and guided the program to tremendous success. The Panthers went 104-44 during his tenure and won South Jersey Group II championships in 2023 and during the recently completed season in March. Middle also won the CAL Playoff Tournament championship in 2024. His teams also won the CAL American Conference regular-season title four times in his five seasons in charge.

After a 14-11 regular season against a very difficult schedule this past winter, Middle made a terrific run through the South Jersey Group II Tournament. The team upset powerful Camden, 67-64, in the sectional championship game on Camden’s home floor after winning a sectional semifinal game at Haddonfield, another traditional small-school power. Middle went on to lose in the state Group II semifinal game to Rumson-Fair Haven.

A 6-4 point guard during his playing days, Greer is one of most accomplished high school basketball players in South Jersey history. After playing his first two seasons at Overbrook High School in Pine Hill, Greer transferred to Middle and led the Panthers to state titles as a junior and senior in 1993-94. The 1993 team reached the now-defunct Tournament of Champions title game. Greer scored 2,637 points over his high school career and was named the Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year and a McDonald’s All-American selection as a senior in 1994.

Greer went on to an excellent college career at Florida State, playing in 117 career games (104 starts) and averaging 8.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists for his career. He averaged 11.1 points and 4.5 rebounds as a senior, and scored 17 points in a first-round NCAA Tournament victory over Texas Christian that season.

Greer then enjoyed a productive professional career, first playing in lower-level pro leagues in the United States before compiling a career that lasted more than a decade in various pro leagues across Europe and western Asia.

Greer returned to Middle first as an assistant under former longtime coach Tom Feraco. He then spent a few seasons as an assistant coach at Camden High School before accepting the head coaching position at Middle prior to the 2021-22 season.

Greer also has extensive coaching experience on the AAU circuit and as a personal basketball trainer.

Middle will not lack candidates for the head coaching position, considering the program’s overall success over the last 35 years. But it’ll still be awfully difficult to replace Greer, not only as a coach but also as a leadership and mentoring presence around the school and its community.

“To say LaMarr Greer is irreplaceable is not an overstatement,” Rementer said in the statement. “He leaves behind a standard that will continue to shape our basketball program and our students for years to come. We are saddened to see him go, but we are excited for him as he begins his next chapter. We want our students to see LaMarr Greer’s journey as a reflection of what is possible.
