Baseball: Southern Cape Strike Out Cancer Classic to feature all five local teams this weekend

All five local high school baseball teams, plus another from Camden County, will participate in the Southern Cape Strike Out Cancer Classic this weekend.

Pool play will be held Saturday at two different fields – Lower Cape May will host a three-team pool that also includes Cape May Tech and Camden County Tech and Wildwood will host another three-team pool that includes Middle Township and Wildwood Catholic.

Teams in each pool will play one another in a round-robin format Saturday. The top two teams from each pool will meet in semifinal games Sunday at Wildwood’s Maxwell Field. Semifinal winners will then meet in the championship game late Sunday afternoon, also at Maxwell Field.

A local high school baseball tournament has been held in some form over the past few seasons. This is the first time, however, two facilities will be used to host games. Lower Cape May won last year’s tournament as the host when it was known as the Caper Classic. The Tigers also won the previous season when the event was held at Wildwood and known as the Warrior Classic.

This season’s tournament has been dubbed the Strike Out Cancer Classic in tribute to former Lower Cape May baseball player Dustin Sturm, who recently battled a rare form of cancer that is now in remission. Sturm is the brother of Wildwood assistant coach Randy Sturm.

Wildwood head coach Rich Hans said any proceeds left from sponsorships and part of the proceeds from food truck sales during the tournament will be donated to a local cancer charity.

SATURDAY, MAY 16

Pool A - Lower Cape May Regional High School

11 am - Cape May Tech vs. Camden County Tech

1:30 pm - Camden County Tech vs. Lower Cape May

4 pm - Lower Cape May vs. Cape May Tech

Pool B - Maxwell Field, Wildwood

11 am - Middle Township vs. Wildwood Catholic

1:30 pm - Wildwood Catholic vs. Wildwood

4 pm - Wildwood vs. Middle Township
