WILDWOOD – The lone team in the event not from Cape May County emerged as the champion of the Southern Cape Strike Out Cancer Classic early Sunday evening at Maxwell Field.

Cape May County Tech rallied from a 7-4 deficit to post an 11-9 victory over Wildwood in the title game after each of the two teams won semifinal games earlier in the day.

The tournament was named as a tribute to former Lower Cape May Regional High School baseball player Dustin Sturm, who recently battled a rare form of head and neck cancer that is now in remission. Sturm was on hand at the event and threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the title game to his brother, Randy, a Wildwood assistant coach.

The following are recaps from Sunday’s games:

Semifinal - Wildwood 6, Lower Cape May 2: Trevor Troiano tossed a complete game with 11 strikeouts against just one walk and also went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBI for Wildwood. Troiano exited the game with 45 hits for the season, breaking the program record for hits in a season held by 2016 graduate Chris Mormile (44). Vinny Sweeney also shined without getting an official at bat as he walked twice, was hit by a pitch and dropped a sacrifice bunt. He also made a highlight-reel diving catch in foul territory down the right field line for a critical out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ashton Ray had a hit and walk for Lower Cape May (10-16).

Semifinal - Camden County Tech 6, Middle Township 3: Johnny Laurick struck out 13 batters, walked just one and conceded only one earned run over six innings to lead Camden Tech into the title game. Joey Shaw went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI to lead CCT’s offense. Cole Adams added a pair of hits and Declan Knecht scored two runs. Tommy Yarson, Nick Matteucci and Ryan Murray each had two hits and Mike Fritsch doubled for Middle (9-12).

Championship - Camden County Tech 11, Wildwood 9: Camden County Tech rallied from a 7-4 deficit to get the victory over the hosts in the title game, scoring seven times over the fifth and sixth innings. Jack Leavey, who pitched three innings in relief for the victory, slugged a two-run triple to break an 8-8 tie in the bottom of the sixth. Chase LaRochelle went 3 for 5 with a double, triple and two runs scored, Joey Shaw had two hits and four RBI and Cole Adams and Lorenzo Galarza each added two hits for Camden Tech (8-15). Nolan Mawhinney had two hits and an RBI, Gianni Troiano hit a two-run single and Trevor Troiano hit his first career home run for Wildwood (18-9). Trailing by three entering the top of the seventh, Wildwood scored a run and had runners on second and third before Leavey got Trevor Troiano to fly out to deep left-center field for the final out.

Camden Tech's Jack Leavey and Joey Shaw were named co-MVPs of the Southern Cape Classic title game.
