The golf team at Lower Cape May Regional High School recently completed an excellent season.
The Caper Tigers posted a record of 17-7 on the season in dual matches and lost just twice in Cape-Atlantic National Conference play, both times to conference champion Egg Harbor Township, to place second in the conference.
“It was a good season,” sixth-year Lower head coach Anthony D’Aleo said. “We had some goals. One of the goals was to win the conference. Obviously, that didn’t happen but we still had a very successful season.”
Lower was led by seniors Cole Bada and Alex Sekela, both of whom qualified for the Cape-Atlantic League championship tournament and were named first team CAL National Conference all-stars. Other key golfers included senior Chase Hansen, junior Jackson Dilworth and sophomore Damian Copson, who was also a CAL tournament qualifier. Other contributors included senior Mike Millard and sophomores Ryan Barber and Liam Grimes.
Lower also placed second to Ocean City at the Cape May County Championships. The Tigers also continued a rivalry match with Cape Henlopen (Del.), traveling across the Delaware Bay on the Cape May Lewes Ferry to play at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. And they also won the Paul Yerk Cup over Middle Township in the annual event held in memory of the former longtime Middle coach and Lower Township school board member.
The team also qualified for the sectional championship match for the fifth time in six seasons.
“Overall, we had a really good group of kids,” said D’Aleo.
Lower had 19 boys out for the team this spring. The program also featured eight girls, allowing it to play four girls-only matches this season. The Caper Tigers picked up their first-ever win in a girls dual match, defeating Schalick. They also competed in various other girls-only tournaments.
Some of the key girls players included juniors, Lina Tostevin, Jessica Birchler, Mia Teng and Maddie Axelsson and sophomore Kaleigh Griser.
