
A pair of local baseball teams competing in the Atlantic Shore Babe Ruth League earned championships earlier this week.
Wildwood-J Byrne Agency won the eight-team A Division title with a wild comeback in the championship game, while Middle Township was crowned winners of the B Division with a convincing victory in its title game.
Wildwood-J Byrne Agency posted a 15-7 win over Mays Landing in the A Division championship game in Somers Point on Monday. The Wildwood team trailed by a 7-1 scoreline after 3 ½ innings but erupted for 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead for good.
Wildwood won the championship after finishing fourth in the regular season. The team beat Mainland II in the quarterfinal round before upsetting top-seeded and previously undefeated Egg Harbor Township in the semifinal round to advance to the game against Mays Landing.
Middle Township won the B Division as the top seed, defeating Absecon Gold, 9-2, in the championship game in Somers Point on Tuesday. The team led 4-2 after four innings but pulled away behind a four-run fifth inning.
Middle went 11-1 in the regular season before posting wins over Egg Harbor Township Black and Wildwood-Joe Canal’s in earlier playoff rounds to reach the title game.
The Atlantic Shore Babe Ruth League features teams from Atlantic and Cape May counties. The A Division consists mostly of players ages 14-16 while the B Division features players ages 13-14.
