One of the Cape-Atlantic League’s longest-tenured boys basketball coaches has stepped away from the bench.

Scott Holden, who guided Lower Cape May Regional High School’s team for the past 16 seasons, recently submitted his resignation from the position after leading the program to one of its best seasons in recent memory last winter.

“It’s as simple as I just felt like it was the right time,” Holden said of his decision to step down.

Holden, who finished with a career mark of 210-207, led Lower to a record of 23-6 during the 2025-26 season. The Caper Tigers won the CAL National Conference title and were victorious in the first two rounds of the South Jersey Group II Tournament before losing a sectional semifinal game to Camden.

The 23 victories were the most in a season for Lower Cape May under Holden. In 2017-18, the team won 21 games and reached the South Jersey Group II title game, falling to eventual state champion Haddonfield.

“The last 10 years or so, I was pretty happy with where the program was and the direction it was going,” Holden said. “Last year will certainly be a really good year to remember. It was a very enjoyable time, because it was a combination of who I got to work with with assistant coaches and a team of players that bought into a system they seemed to enjoy playing.”

The Holden name is synonymous with Lower Cape May Regional basketball. Scott is the third member of his family to hold the head coaching position. His older brother, Pat, and his father, George, were each longtime successful coaches in the program. Patrick Holden Jr. and Lauren Holden – Pat’s children and Scott’s nephew and niece – are the school’s respective all-time leading scorers for boys and girls basketball.

“Our family’s legacy is always going to be there,” said Holden, a social studies teacher at Lower Cape May. “The best-case scenario going forward is for them to find someone who’s eager to start a new legacy here at Lower Cape May.”

Lower Cape May is expected to interview candidates to replace Holden as coach beginning next week.

Lower loses its two leading scorers in Ty Bonner and John Fernandez to graduation but otherwise is expected to return three starters and two key players off the bench from last season’s team.
