A former Cape-Atlantic League great appears set to take over the Middle Township High School boys basketball program.

Christian Mortellite, who most recently completed a three-season stint as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Richard Stockton University, is listed on the agenda to be approved as the school’s next boys basketball coach at Thursday’s regular monthly meeting of the Middle Township Board of Education. He is also on the agenda for approval as a new business teacher in the high school.

Mortellite, a 2013 graduate of Hammonton High School, replaces LaMarr Greer, who went 104-44 over five seasons at Middle, including two South Jersey championships and CAL Playoff Tournament championship. Greer resigned from his position at the school and as coach in the spring to take a job related to the men’s basketball program at the University of Alabama.

CHRISTIAN MORTELLITE

Mortellite is considered one of the top players in Hammonton High School history. The 6-6 forward scored 1,605 career points, good for second all-time at the school, and led the CAL in scoring as a senior at 22.1 points per game. He went on to play college basketball at Division II Bloomsburg University, where he set school records with 2,037 career points, 314 three-point field goals, 441 free throws and an .887 free-throw shooting percentage. He averaged 19.2 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting 41.8 percent from three-point range for his college career. He averaged 20.5 points and 6.6 rebounds as a senior in 2018.

Mortellite later played professionally for two seasons in Portugal before returning to his high school alma mater to coach for a couple of seasons under former head coach Joe Martino. He then joined the staff at Stockton under Scott Bittner for the 2023-24 season, serving through last season.

Mortellite takes over a Middle team that went 18-12 and won the South Jersey Group II title last season. The team will look much different next season, however, as a couple of key players have graduated and a top underclassman has transferred to another school.
