ERMA – The Lower Cape May Regional and St. Joseph high school boys soccer teams each couldn’t find a goal in their Cape-Atlantic United Conference game Thursday afternoon.

But that doesn’t mean the contest didn’t feature a number of thrilling, if also frustrating depending on which side you may have been rooting for, moments.

The two teams combined to hit the crossbar or post five times. They also created quite a few more anxious moments for their opponent with other dangerous balls and chances.

But in the end, neither team could produce just one moment of enough quality to get the ball into the other side’s net as the teams settled for a scoreless draw through 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of extra time.

Lower talented freshmen Evan Volpe hit the post twice. The Tigers had another long ball off a free kick deep into the second half rattle the crossbar. And Chris Duly had a header saved at the left post by St. Joe goalkeeper Tristan Rodgers before teammate Dom Garcia could pounce on any rebound.

St. Joseph struck the crossbar twice, both times in the extra periods. The Wildcats also nearly scored in the dying moments of regulation when a shot deflected past Lower goalkeeper Liam Grimes but Caper Tiger back Gavin Ridgway cleared the ball off the line to end the danger.

Lower, which went just 5-13 last season, moved to 4-0-1 both overall and in CAL United play with the result. St. Joseph went to 2-1-2 overall, 2-0-2 CAL United.

Lower and St. Joe are the only remaining unbeaten teams in CAL United games.
