WILDWOOD – The Atlantic City High School boys soccer team’s defense was proving difficult for Wildwood to break down during Tuesday afternoon’s Cape-Atlantic United Conference contest.

It seemed evident a moment of serious quality was going to be needed in order for the Warriors to get a goal.

They got it from Alex Palomec.

The senior midfielder’s magical chip shot with less than 10 minutes remaining sailed over the head of Atlantic City goalkeeper Dennis Castro, nicked the underside of the crossbar, struck the left post and settled into the corner of goal to account for the only scoring in a 1-0 Wildwood victory.

The loss avenged a 2-0 defeat by Wildwood to the Vikings earlier this month.

That setback to Atlantic City in the second game of the season was the last time Wildwood suffered a negative result, the Warriors now 5-0-1 in their last six games.

The win allowed Wildwood (5-2-1 overall, 5-1-1 CAL United) to keep within striking distance of Lower Cape May and St. Joseph in the race for top honors in the conference. Lower (7-0-2 in CAL United) and St. Joseph (5-0-2 in CAL United) are each slightly ahead of the Warriors. Wildwood hosts St. Joseph on Thursday.

On the winning goal, Palomec accepted a pass out of the midfield from teammate Sean Cunniff, dribbled into the right side of the area and sent his brilliant, perfectly-weighted chip shot over Castro that twice kissed the woodwork before failing softly into the net.

Wildwood controlled the flow of play for much of the contest but was held off the scoreboard by a stingy Viking back line and a couple of good saves by Castro.

Despite Wildwood’s possession advantage, Atlantic City was given a golden opportunity to break the deadlock 10 minutes before the goal by Palomec, but gifted the Warriors a huge let-off when the Vikings missed the net on a penalty-kick strike.

The shutout was the fifth of the season for Wildwood goalkeeper Michael McWade. Wildwood has been scored upon just once during its current six-game unbeaten string.
