ERMA – One hundred minutes of soccer failed to produce a goal Friday evening as local rivals Lower Cape May and Wildwood Catholic Academy played to a scoreless draw through regulation and two periods of extra time on the Caper Tigers’ Senior Night.
The goalkeepers – Wildwood Catholic’s Theo Margarites and Lower Cape May’s Liam Grimes – did not see much action but each did make vital stops when needed.
Grimes leaped high into the air to gather a crossing pass with his fingertips in the first half with a pair of Wildwood Catholic players in position to easily head the ball into goal had it reached its intended destination. Grimes also made a diving stop of a shot by Wildwood Catholic’s Al Diallo 13 minutes into the second half.
Margarites was called into serious action in extra time when he made a diving stop at the left post of a shot off a free kick.
Wildwood Catholic received a huge let-off late in the regulation when a clever shot by Lower Cape May’s Darin Dyakov from the left flank struck the post and caromed away harmlessly.
Lower Cape May (9-3-3 overall, 9-2-3 Cape-Atlantic United Conference) snapped a three-game loss streak with the result. The contest marked the third time this season the Caper Tigers have played to a scoreless draw, the others coming against St. Joseph and Wildwood.
Wildwood Catholic (6-3-3 overall and CAL United) extended its unbeaten streak to five games. The Crusaders are 3-0-2 over that stretch.
