Former Middle Township High School basketball star and current Cape May Technical High School athletic director Dave Smith is set to receive one of the highest athletic honors at his college alma mater.

Smith will be inducted into the Gwynedd-Mercy University Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 30 as part of a year-long celebration of the university’s 75th anniversary for his contributions to the school’s men’s basketball program.

Smith, a 2005 graduate of Middle, was the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Player of the Year and D3Hoops.com all-region first team selection as a senior at Gwynedd Mercy in 2008-09. He was named conference tournament MVP while leading GMU to the PAC championship.

Smith, a 6-7 forward, averaged 14.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.9 blocked shots as a senior for the Griffins, who finished 23-6 overall and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

For his career, Smith ranks among the top 10 all-time at Gwynedd Mercy in points per game at 13.4, field goals made with 446, field-goal percentage at .596, total rebounds with 575, rebounds per game at 7.7, total blocked shots with 158 and blocked shots per game at 2.1.

He finished his college career with 1,008 points in just three seasons and was named the Gwynedd Mercy Athletics Male Scholar Athlete of the Year as a senior.

Smith finished his collegiate career at Gwynedd Mercy after playing one season at Division I Lafayette as a freshman.

As a high school senior at Middle Township, Smith posted five triple-doubles and was named a first team Cape-Atlantic League all-star. He averaged 17 points, 14 rebounds, 4.5 blocked shots and four assists per game that season for Middle.

Smith became the athletic director at Cape May Tech earlier this year after briefly working as an administrator in the Upper Township school system. He was previously a mathematics teacher and boys basketball coach at Crest Memorial Elementary School in Wildwood Crest.
