CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Bubba McNeil was at the center of a festive evening in the Middle Township High School gymnasium Monday.

The senior guard from the boys basketball team sank a right-wing three-pointer in the third quarter to secure his place among the school’s all-time greats during the Panthers’ 71-32 victory over Millville. The basket allowed McNeil to surpass 1,000 career points, becoming the 15th male basketball player in school history to do so.

The game was stopped for a brief ceremony as McNeil was mobbed by his teammates. He was later presented with balloons and a commemorative ball and received hugs from family members while trying to hold back tears.

McNeil, Middle’s first 1,000-point scorer in 13 seasons, led an extremely balanced Middle attack with 18 points. He finished the contest with 1,003 career points.

Michael Zarfati added nine points and Jamir McNeil, Bubba’s younger brother, added eight, two of which came on a thunderous dunk on the possession after the game was restarted following Bubba’s milestone basket. Amir Elston also added eight points.

Middle improved to 15-2 with the victory. The win was the team’s fourth straight and 12th in 13 games.

The Panthers are next in action Wednesday at home against Ocean City.

There were five other career 1,000-point scorers from Middle Township in the gym to see the Panthers' Bubba McNeil score his 1,000th career point on Monday.
