Margaret Mace, Teitelman teams win Optimist Tournament championships

The girls team from Margaret Mace Elementary and the boys team from Richard M. Teitelman School won championships at the annual George A. D’Amico Memorial Basketball Tournament earlier this month.

The tournament, which included seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls teams from across Cape May County and southern Atlantic County, was hosted by the Optimist Club of the Wildwoods at the North Wildwood Recreation Center.

Margaret Mace topped Dennis Township, 43-34, in the girls title game. Laila Fathi scored 11 points, Aubrey Bradway netted 10 points and Sabrin Fathi chipped in nine points for Mace. Juniper King and Iyanna Wallace each scored 11 points and Katie Creamer added nine for Dennis Township.

In the boys title game, Teitelman posted a 40-27 win over Crest Memorial. Jacob Plenn tallied 13 points, Chris Hawes sank 10 points and Cooper Turner contributed eight points for the winners. Angelo Panzini scored 14 points and Michael Sciarra added six points in the loss.

Girls all-tournament team: Margaret Mace - Laila Fathi (MVP), Aubrey Bradway, Sabrin Fathi; Dennis Township - Juniper King (sportsmanship award), Katie Creamer; Crest Memorial - Lily Atkinson; Linwood - Mia Granieri; Wildwood - Addison Troiano; Wildwood Catholic Academy - Avery Hanson.

Boys all-tournament team: Teitelman - Jacob Plenn (MVP), Chris Hawes, Cooper Turner; Crest Memorial - Michael Sciarra (sportsmanship award), Evan Papageorgiou; Dennis Township - Joey Povio; Margaret Mace - Jay Hennessey; Middle Township - Amir Sample; Ocean City - Alex Whitworth; Wildwood - Lysander Ruiz; Wildwood Catholic - Theo Margarites.
