ERMA – On an evening when Evan Shoffler recorded his 100th career hit, the Lower Cape May Regional High School senior also limited his program’s biggest rival to zero hits.
Shoffler became just the fourth Lower Cape May Regional baseball player to record 100 career hits when he smashed a triple to the gap in right-center field in the third inning of Thursday’s game against Middle Township under the lights.
He wasn’t finished there.
Shoffler capped an amazing evening by firing a no-hitter in his team’s 3-1 victory, striking out 13 batters and conceding just two walks. The lone Middle run was aided across the plate by a pair of errors in the third inning.
The game was tied in the bottom of the sixth, until Lower’s Amari West stroked a two-run single with two outs and two strikes that plated Kody Lewis and Matt DiCave.
Hunter Ray tied the game for Lower in the fourth. He led off the inning with a double and then scored on an errant throw as he stole third base.
Jerome Booth scored Middle’s run.
Shoffler is the fourth Lower Cape May player to reach 100 career hits. He joins 2007 graduate Matt Szczur (140 hits), 1993 graduate Dan Olson (121 hits) and 2012 graduate Mike Mulligan (102 hits).
Lower (13-11) won for the seventh time in eight games.
Middle (9-11) got a complete-game effort from Tyler McDevitt in the loss. He struck out four and gave up just four hits.
But this night belonged to Shoffler, who enjoyed an evening both he and those in attendance won’t soon forget.
