Lower Cape May Regional High School graduate Madie Gibson continues to make a major impact as a professional soccer player in Ireland.

Gibson, of Athlone Town AFC, recently picked up SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division Player of the Month honors for September, a couple of days before helping her side clinch the 2024 league championship.

Gibson netted the opener in the 27th minute in Athlone Town’s 2-0 victory over Bohemian FC last Saturday that secured the Premier Division championship.

The victory improved Athlone Town to 15-2-2 during the current league campaign. The team is scheduled to finish the Premier Division season this Saturday at Galway United.

Gibson leads Athlone Town in both goals with seven and assists with 10. Her assist total is tops in the Women’s Premier Division.

Athlone Town also has another championship to play for later this month. The team will take on Shelbourne United in the Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup Final on Sunday, Oct. 20, at Tallaght Stadium in Dublin. Athlone Town beat Shelbourne in last year’s FAI Cup Final.

Gibson is in her third season with Athlone Town after previously playing professionally with FC Gintra in Lithuania.

A 2015 graduate of Lower Cape May, Gibson scored a school and Cape May County record 126 career goals in her high school career and helped the Lady Tigers to Cape-Atlantic National Conference titles as a junior and senior.

Gibson was also a standout basketball and lacrosse player at Lower. She scored more than 1,000 career points in basketball, helping Lower Cape May win its first South Jersey title during her senior season.

Gibson went on to enjoy an outstanding career at Division I Monmouth University, where she finished her career fifth in program history with 35 goals and second in program history with 32 assists. She was named the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and was Monmouth’s first three-time All-East Region selection.
