WILDWOOD – The Wildwood Catholic Academy softball team’s offense was in midseason form in the team’s opener Thursday.
The Crusaders lashed 18 hits and enjoyed a 13-run inning in breezing past island rival Wildwood, 23-4, at Fox Park in five innings.
Wildwood Catholic’s third, fourth and fifth hitters in its batting order combined for 11 hits and 11 RBI to lead the Crusaders, as Kristen Wareham and Julia Wallace each went 4 for 4 with four RBI and Emma Johnson went 3 for 5 with three RBI. One of Wallace’s hits was an inside-the-park home run.
Abby Vessels added two hits and three RBI and Cara Millard chipped in two hits, including a double. Lilah Sawyer had a double and four runs scored.
Johnson was the winning pitcher. She struck out 11 and gave up three hits.
Antionette Cooper hit a three-run triple for Wildwood.
Wildwood Catholic is next in action Friday at Pleasantville, while Wildwood goes to Salem on Monday.
