CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The Cape May County Technical High School softball team is writing one of the great stories of the spring sports season in Cape May County.

A program that has never posted a season above .500 since playing at the varsity level since the mid 1990s improved to 9-4 this spring behind Tuesday’s 7-1 win over Wildwood.

“We’ve built this culture for a couple years now,” Tech coach Cortney Walters said. “They kids have bought in. There’s been a lot of teamwork.”

The Lady Hawks began the season with three straight losses. They’ve now won nine of their last 10 games, including five straight.

It’s been an enjoyable season for the players in the program thus far. Tech had won no more than six games in a season in at least a decade until the team was a bit more competitive in 2024, going 10-13. This season has been even better.

“They’ve definitely stepped up,” Walters said. “Our older kids remember some years when it was tough and they knew we’d have a hard time in a lot of our games. But you can see it in their faces how much fun they’re having now. If someone makes a mistake, every one of them is there to pick each other up.”

Although the team’s last three victories have been on the comfortable side, Tech has helped its cause by winning a handful of close games. They posted a 17-15 win over Lower Cape May, before a wild 12-11 comeback victory over Wildwood Catholic and a 14-12 win over Atlantic City. The win over the Vikings avenged a loss from earlier in the season.

“We’ve had some monumental wins, like AC and Wildwood Catholic,” Walters said.

Senior outfielder Amanda Daino has sparked the Lady Hawks. She had two hits and two runs scored in Tuesday’s win over Wildwood and is batting a team-best .558 with 29 hits in 52 at bats. Her 30 runs scored and nine stolen bases are also far and away tops on the team at this point. Daino also recorded her 100th career hit earlier this week.

“Amanda is a true leadoff hitter,” Walters said. “She has almost 30 hits already and if she’s not getting a hit, she’s getting on base somehow. She gives 110 percent and she runs everything out. She’s been a game changer for us.”

Senior Brynn Brophy has provided a nice boost to Cape May Tech. After sitting out the beginning of the season due to NJSIAA transfer rules after coming over from Middle Township, Brophy has raised the level of the team’s pitching. On Tuesday, she struck out 13 batters and went 3 for 4 with three RBI at the plate.

“She’s a great kid and a great pitcher,” Walters said.

In addition to its pitching, Tech has used improved offense to help forge its success. Ginger Radzieta (.429), Brophy (.400), Annbella Curvan (.372), Emma Oravits (.349), Jordyn Sharp (.348), Brianna McNair (.324) and Melissa Rivello (.321) are regulars each hitting better than .300. Oravits leads the team in RBI with 19, doubles with six and walks with 15.

Cape May Tech currently sits in second place in the Cape-Atlantic United Conference, a game in the loss column behind first-place Oakcrest. The Lady Hawks are set to play a quarterfinal game in the New Jersey Technical School Athletic Conference Tournament later this week.

“We’d love to at least get to the finals of the tech tournament,” Walters said. “We also would like to get a home playoff game for the state tournament. If we can get some more wins, maybe things will swing our way.”

For Wildwood i(2-6) n Tuesday’s loss, back-to-back doubles by Emma Contreras and Addison Troiano led to its team’s run. The Lady Warriors are a young team. They have zero seniors on the roster and regularly start seven freshmen.
