Saturday’s Caper Classic features all five local high school baseball teams

All five area high school baseball teams will come together for a tournament this weekend, as Lower Cape May Regional hosts the Caper Classic on Saturday.

Games will be played at two facilities – Lower’s varsity field behind the high school and Bennett Field located in the Freeman S. Douglass Jr. Memorial Recreation Complex just north of the school’s campus.

Wildwood had previously hosted the Warrior Classic, which brought together most, if not all, of the local teams in the past. The tournament had not been held for quite a few seasons until Wildwood brought it back last year. Wildwood asked that other schools in the area rotate as hosts and, thus, that distinction falls to the Caper Tigers for 2025.

Teams are seeded for the tournament based on their results at last year’s event. Host Lower Cape May, the 2025 champion, is the top seed, with 2025 runner-up Wildwood seeded second. Cape May Tech is third, with Middle Township fourth and Wildwood Catholic – which did not participate in last year’s event in its first season after resurrecting its program – is fifth.

Middle and Wildwood Catholic will play an opening-round game, with the winner reaching the semifinal to play Lower Cape May. Wildwood and Cape May Tech will face off in the other semifinal.

Any team that loses its first game, except for Lower Cape May, will play in a consolation game.

The championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Lower’s high school field. 

2025 Caper Classic Schedule (Saturday, May 10)

Game 1: 12 noon - (5) Wildwood Catholic vs. (4) Middle Township (Bennett Field)

Game 2: 12 noon - (3) Cape May Tech vs. (2) Wildwood (LCMR Field)

Game 3: 3 pm - Loser Game 1 vs.Loser Cape 2 (Bennett Field)

Game 4: 3 pm - Winner Game 1 vs. Lower Cape May (LCMR Field)

Game 5: 6 pm - Winner Game 2 vs. Winner Game 4 (LCMR Field)
