A second-place finish by a Middle Township sophomore and a school-record time by a Wildwood senior highlighted local athletes’ efforts at South Jersey high school track and field sectional championships over the weekend.

The top six finishers in each event at each sectional meet qualified for this weekend’s state championship meets.

Middle sophomore Allison Nagle narrowly missed becoming a sectional champion, placing second in the javelin at the Group II meet at Delsea Regional High School. Her best toss of 109 feet, 7 inches was less than two feet short of Barneget’s Elayna Ordonez, who won with a throw of 111-5.

In the Group I meet at Pennsauken, Wildwood’s Macie McCracken broke her own school record time with a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter race. McCracken finished in 5 minutes, 21.4 seconds. Jordan Hadfield of Schalick was the winner in 5:04.83.

In addition to Nagle, Middle Township had numerous other athletes qualify for the state championship meet.

On the boys side, John Wright was third in the discus with a throw of 139-2 and Jamar Mack placed sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:39.58.

For the Middle girls, Gracie Repici qualified for states in the 1,600 with a third-place effort in 5:23.10. She also narrowly missed qualifying in the 800, finishing eighth out of 33 competitors in 2:27.7. Repici’s teammate Zoe Super, also qualified in the 1,600 with a fifth-place finish in 5:30.99.

Middle also produced two state qualifiers in the pole vault, as Haylie Rowlands placed third at a height of 8-6 and Avaclaire Scales was fifth at 7-6. Tying Scales for fifth place in the event was Lower Cape May’s Katarina Ojasso.

And Essence Still was also a state qualifier for Middle with a fifth-place finish in the high jump at a height of 5-0.

Also for Lower Cape May, Ella Biersbach qualified for states in the long jump at a distance of 17-0.5.

And also of note for Lower Cape May, Jasmine Black qualified for the finals in the 100 hurdles out of a field of 34 athletes but just missed out on qualifying for states with an eighth-place finish in 20.95 seconds.
