ERMA – Ty Bonner’s monster fourth quarter and Cole Sederland’s big second half helped carry the Lower Cape May Regional High School boys basketball team to its biggest win of the season to date Monday.

Bonner netted 15 of his game-high 22 points in the final period and Sederland scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half as Lower bested Cedar Creek, 66-54, in a critical Cape-Atlantic National Conference contest.

The win, Lower’s sixth straight and 11th in its last 12 games, moved the team into sole possession of first place in the CAL National Conference. The Tigers improved to 15-3 overall, 9-1 CAL National. Cedar Creek (12-5, 8-2) fell into a second-place tie with Millville, although Cedar Creek does own a victory over the Thunderbolts.

“This is a big win,” Lower coach Scott Holden said. “Cedar Creek is a very well coached team that’s very physical and I thought we were physical back with them. Our guys rose to the challenge.”

Bonner, a senior who’s already a career 1,000-point scorer, controlled the fourth quarter as Lower turned a six-point margin after three quarters into a 12-point victory. He scored in a variety of ways in the period, making two layups, a tough turnaround jump shot from the top of the lane, a three-pointer and four free throws in as many attempts.

“Ty’s a competitor, and he knows his guys from playing with them for so long now,” Holden said.

Sederland also gave Lower a major boost, the junior connecting on four three-pointers and a pair of layups.

“We’ve played a couple teams now that have big men and they tend to sag off to take away our dribble penetration, so we have stuff in place to get the ball in the corners and Cole hit some big ones from there tonight. So did Gavin Ridgway,” Holden said.

Ridgway added a pair of threes off the bench. All told, Lower sank nine three-pointers.

John Fernandez scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half for the Caper Tigers.

Jose Ramos provided one of the highlights of the game when he swished a fallaway three-pointer at the buzzer of the first half.

Senior Markus Polite, one of the CAL’s top scorers, led Cedar Creek with 15 points. Freshman Jayden Henry added 14.

The game was played in front of a large and boisterous crowd in Lower Cape May’s old gymnasium. Lower has moved recent home games into that gym after experiencing some issues with its clock and scoreboard in the newer gym.

Lower can clinch the CAL National title outright with a win at Millville on Thursday. The Thunderbolts beat Lower by a point in the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 16. Lower’s final CAL National game is at Egg Harbor Township Friday.

“We still have a couple games in conference away, so this isn’t a done deal,” Holden said. “We have to finish the job.”
