WILDWOOD – The Wildwood High School girls basketball team had plenty to celebrate Tuesday evening.
Prior to the game, an announcement was made to recognize the 300th career assist for senior point guard Angela Wilber, attained in an important road victory over Hammonton the day before.
Then, it was teammate Rebecca Benichou’s turn to feel the spotlight.
Benichou scored the 1,000th point of her career and later made her 200th career three-point basket in the Lady Warriors’ 58-24 victory over Clayton.
The personal milestones were also accompanied by a team accomplishment, the victory giving Wildwood the Tri-County Classic Division title in the school’s final season in the league. Wildwood’s sports teams are set to move back to the Cape-Atlantic League after a 23-year absence next scholastic year.
Benichou, a junior guard, is the 13th girls basketball player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points. She’s the seventh to do it prior to her senior season.
Needing seven points entering the game to reach the milestone, Benichou reached 1,000 points on a bank shot from the top of the lane late in the first quarter.
“My team really helped me out tonight and my coaches and everyone helped get me here,” Benichou said.
The left-handed shooter with deep range went into the contest needing five three-pointers to reach 200 for her career. She made her fifth of the game late in the third quarter, sinking a long three-pointer after shaking free from a defender beyond the top of the key. She’s the fourth Wildwood player with at least 200 career three-pointers.
Benichou finished the contest with a game-high 23 points.
“I could tell my teammates were really trying to get me the ball, and I was shooting it pretty much whenever I could because I was desperate to get it,” Benichou said with a laugh.
Benichou is the youngest of three sisters to play in Wildwood’s program, after Leah and Maya. Her twin brother, Danny, is a player on Wildwood’s boys basketball team.
“I always had a dream about this,” Benichou said. “Ever since my sisters played here I wanted to be up on that (1,000-point) board. They didn’t get it but they helped set me up for this by working with me when I was younger. This is a goal I had. I really wanted this.”
The victory improved Wildwood to 16-6 overall, 7-0 in division play. The team finishes out its division slate at Salem on Thursday before participating in the Tri-County Conference’s championship tournament next week. Wildwood is the No. 2 seed for the tournament. Later in the month, the Lady Warriors will begin their quest to reach the South Jersey Group I title game for the seventh straight time.
“We need to keep up the way we’re playing,” Benichou said.
Sophomore Laila Fathi added 10 points for Wildwood in the win over Clayton. The Lady Warriors had nine different players score.
The evening, however, belonged to Benichou, who was asked if she thought she’d ever forget the experience of attaining two major milestones in the same game.
“No, I definitely will not,” she said with a smile.
