Amaya Harmon made history last weekend.
The Middle Township High School junior became the school’s first-ever district champion in girls wrestling when she took first place in the 235-pound weight class at the District 12 Tournament at Rowan College of South Jersey on Sunday.
This was the inaugural season for district tournaments in girls wrestling across the state.
Seeded second in the weight class, Harmon pinned her way to the championship. She decked Jessica Fantini of Schalick in the quarterfinal round in 3 minutes, 6 seconds, before scoring another pin in just 52 seconds in the semifinal round over Briella Davies of Kingsway. In the final, Harmon defeated top-seeded Tatiyonna Crawford of Pennsville by earning another win by fall 47 seconds into the final period.
Harmon will next compete in the South Region Tournament this Sunday at Absegami High School. She is seeded second out of 12 wrestlers in her weight class. The top four finishers in each weight class qualify for the state championships in Atlantic City beginning March 12.
In addition to her district championship, Harmon is already a two-time Cape-Atlantic League individual champion.
