Ocean City golfers sweep individual and team titles at high school county championship tournament

Ocean City High School produced the individual and team championships at the Cape May County boys and girls golf championship tournament held at Shore Gate Golf Club Tuesday.

Often held in less-than-ideal conditions, this year’s event was played under warm, sunny skies although a significant breeze certainly affected the players throughout.

The Raiders' Dale Curtis and Masey Heenan were the respective boys and girls champions, each leading their respective teams to championships as well.

Curtis and teammate Archie Schreiber tied for first place in the 18-hole event at 83, with Curtis winning the individual title on the first playoff hole.

Ocean City’s Luke Chickadel was third with an 83 and the Raiders’ Grady Hoffman tied with Cape May Tech’s Liam Porter for fourth at 84.

Those four led Ocean City to a team score of 331 to finish comfortably ahead of second-place Lower Cape May, which finished at 363. Cape May Tech (364), Middle Township (373) and Wildwood Catholic (443) also competed in the boys event.

Lower Cape May’s Alex Sekela placed sixth with an 85 and Middle Township’s Ian Seitz finished seventh at 87. Ocean City’s Jack Voigt, Middle Township’s Nick DiStaulo and Lower Cape May’s Cole Bada each shot 89 to finish in a three-way tie for eighth place.

Heenan won the three-team girls competition with a 94 to finish one stroke ahead of teammate Julie Costello. Another Raider golfer, Lillian Flora, was third at 105. Middle Township’s Savannah Lasher (114) and Alanna Lloyd (115) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Ocean City totaled 416 as a team in the girls tournament, followed by Middle Township (490) and Lower Cape May (552).

Tuesday’s tournament represented the 10th edition of the Cape May County golf championships. This was the third straight year an official girls competition was held.
