Addison Troiano hurt her shoulder while catching and switched to play first base for the final two innings of the Wildwood High School softball team’s game on Wednesday afternoon.

The minor injury didn’t affect her hitting, however.

“Good thing it didn’t,” she said with a laugh.

The sophomore slugged a three-run home run in the fifth inning and a grand slam in the sixth inning as Wildwood rallied from a 6-1 deficit to post an improbable 8-7 victory over Pitman in a Tri-County Classic Division game.

Both home runs easily cleared the fence in left-center field at Fox Park.

Troiano’s first home run brought Wildwood to within striking distance at 6-4. Her grand slam in the sixth sparked a wild celebration around home plate as the Lady Warriors took the lead for the first time over a Pitman team that had beaten them by a 7-1 scoreline one day earlier.

“It was crazy,” Troiano said. “I was so happy I could do that for our team and put us in the lead. I knew our defense would back it up.”

Three singles allowed Pitman (9-6) to pull within a run in the top of the seventh but Troiano caught a popup near the bag at first base to seal the victory with the tying run on third base.

“It was a very exciting game for us, especially coming off yesterday’s game,” Troiano said. “We just kept battling until the end.”

Troiano, who also singled and scored on a hit by Julia Ennis in the third inning, finished the contest 3 for 4 with three runs scored and seven RBI.

Troiano’s output against Pitman only added to what has already been an extraordinary offensive season so far. She’s batting a robust .686 (24 hits in 35 at bats) with four doubles, a triple, 21 RBI and 11 runs scored in just 11 games. The home runs she hit Wednesday were the first of her high school career. It’s been a breakout season for a player who hit just .250 as a freshman.

“Coming off last year, I didn’t hit my best,” Troiano said. “I tried to come in with a positive mindset and be a role model and leader for the team. I wanted to stay consistent with my hitting and get on base for my teammates.”

Wildwood (5-6) won for the third time in four games. The recent stretch of good play has come after a weeklong trip to the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach ended with four lopsided losses to outstanding teams from different parts of the country.

“It was definitely rough down there,” Troiano said. “But it was an eye opener to see all those really good teams. We had to stay connected and try to come back and beat as many of the teams we play here as we can.”

Wildwood is enjoying a more competitive season than in recent years despite featuring a roster that has just one senior in Cydnee Kilian.

“It’s definitely a lot of fun,” Troiano said. “We’re a young team that’s going to get even better. It’s fun to see the team grow and get better. Our hitting and fielding has gotten better over the last few weeks.”

Also for Wildwood in the comeback win, Charlotte Booth had two hits and two runs scored and Cara Millard tripled. On the mound, Emma Contreras struck out eight and conceded four earned runs.

Wildwood is next in action Friday against Gateway before facing local rival Wildwood Catholic on Monday.
