Lower Cape May and Middle Township each went unbeaten in pool play to highlight the opening day of the Southern Cape Strike Out Cancer Classic Saturday.
Games were played at Lower Cape May Regional High School and Wildwood’s Maxwell Field.
Wildwood and Camden County Tech also each advanced to Sunday’s semifinals as each went 1-1 in their respective pools.
Sunday’s semifinal and championship games will be played at Maxwell Field.
The schedule is as follows:
11 am - Wildwood vs. Lower Cape May
1:30 pm - Camden County Tech vs. Middle Township
4 pm - Semifinal winners in championship game
The following are recaps of Saturday’s games:
POOL A
Camden County Tech 13, Cape May Tech 3: Declan Knecht went 2 for 5 with a triple and five RBI to pace Camden Tech. Tristan Blakeslee had two hits in the loss.
Lower Cape May 9, Camden County Tech 5: Ty Heacock went 2 for 4 with two doubles and four RBI and Ashton Ray had two hits and three runs scored to pace the Lower Cape May offense. Chase Slaney also had two hits. Miguel Carillo conceded just one unearned run in three innings of relief for Lower.
Lower Cape May 13, Cape May Tech 2: Ty Heacock and Blake Sederland each went 2 for 3 with a double in the win. Ashton Ray and Cooper Milligan each had a hit, two walks and two runs scored. Liam Fairman tossed a five-inning complete game for the pitching win. Andrew Pashley had an RBI hit for Tech.
POOL B
Middle Township 23, Wildwood Catholic 5: Ryan Murray went 4 for 5 with two doubles and four RBI and Tommy Yarson was 3 for 5 with a double and three runs scored for Middle. Nick Matteucci added two hits and three RBI and Joe Eisele and Kyle Mick each had two hits and two RBI for the Panthers. Brian Lopez and Nick Antonicello each posted two hits for Wildwood Catholic.
Wildwood 11, Wildwood Catholic 3: Trevor Troiano and Michael Sciarra each had two hits and two RBI and Michael Blanda went 2 for 3 with a triple and two runs scored for Wildwood, which scored eight times in the first inning. Louis Sewell pitched a complete game, striking out 11 against zero walks. He threw 75 of his 94 pitches for strikes. Ashe O’Donnell doubled and tripled and Nick Antonicello, Brian Lopez and James Koch each had two hits in the loss.
Middle Township 9, Wildwood 6: Wildwood cut a 5-0 deficit to 5-4 after six innings, but Middle scored four times in the top of the seventh to pull away. Nathan Stocker was 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored, Tommy Yarson went 2 for 4 with a triple and Gavin McDonnell added two hits and two runs scored for Middle. Tommy Phillips pitched five innings for the win. Trevor Troiano hit a two-run triple for Wildwood.
