500-win coach to lead LCMR boys basketball program

One of the winningest high school boys basketball coaches in South Jersey history is set to lead the program at Lower Cape May Regional High School.

Jay Flanagan, most recently the head coach at Rancocas Valley, has been approved as the Caper Tigers’ next head coach at the regular meeting of the school’s Board of Education Wednesday evening.

Flanagan will be replacing Scott Holden, who resigned after last season. Holden went 210-207 over 16 seasons, including last season’s 23-6 campaign that included the Cape-Atlantic National Conference title.

Flanagan will bring a career coaching record of 529-388 to Lower Cape May. He led Rancocas Valley for the past 20 seasons after a 10-year stint at Burlington Township and previous shorter coaching runs at Moorestown Friends and Riverside. He led RV to the state Group IV title in 2008, the Central Jersey Group IV crown in 2011 and division championships in 2007 and 2008.

Flanagan is the fourth-winningest active high school boys basketball coach in South Jersey behind St. Augustine Prep’s Paul Rodio, Egg Harbor Township’s Joe Kessler and Haddonfield’s Paul Wiedeman. He is the 14th boys basketball coach in South Jersey history to surpass 500 career wins.

Flanagan, who owns a second home in North Wildwood, retired as a teacher at Rancocas Valley in June. 

Flanagan was also previously an accomplished girls soccer coach. He amassed a career mark of 246-119-4 in that sport over a career at Burlington Township and Rancocas Valley. He led Burlington Township to the South Jersey Group I title in 1988 and RV to three division championships.
