Gianni Troiano tossed three touchdown passes and also ran for a score to help Wildwood to a 28-14 win over Gloucester Catholic.

WILDWOOD – After the game, Gianni Troiano said he didn’t think he played all that well at quarterback.

The results say otherwise.

Troiano had a hand in all of the scoring plays by the Wildwood High School football team as the Warriors posted a 28-14 victory over Gloucester Catholic at windswept and at times rainy Maxwell Field Friday.

Troiano tossed two touchdown passes to Dayvon Williams and one to Trevor Troiano, ran for a 19-yard score himself and also flipped two-point conversion passes to Trevor Troiano and Mario Rivera.

Williams scored his touchdowns on similar plays, taking short screen passes and weaving his way into the end zone to stake the Warriors to a 14-0 lead.

“We started off strong because our screen game was good,” Wildwood coach Ken Loomis said. “We couldn’t get any momentum in our run game because their line was really pushing up the field, so we thought we could take advantage of that with our screen game. Daywon taking two screens to the house was awesome.”

Gloucester Catholic got back in the game on a long touchdown run by quarterback Jahdir Edwards in the second quarter. The Rams threatened to score again late in the half but Matt Meher’s touchdown-saving tackle inside the 5-yard line became critical as the Rams went on to commit numerous penalties to back themselves out of scoring range before eventually punting.

Wildwood put the game away in the second half, shortly after a spectacular rainbow illuminated the skies around Maxwell Field. Gianni Troiano found his wide-open cousin at the goal line for a 14-yard touchdown play in the third quarter to make the score 20-6. Then, one play after Wildwood stopped Gloucester Catholic (0-4) on downs, Gianni Troiano ran around left end on a quarterback keeper and broke two tackles on his way to the end zone to extend the lead to 28-6.

Gloucester Catholic got the game’s final score with a little more than three minutes remaining.

Wildwood improved to 2-3, the victory coming a week after a lopsided loss to Middle Township after the Warriors trailed by just one score at halftime.

Wildwood next plays at Buena – led by head coach Frank Riggitano, Wildwood assistant last season – on Friday.

“This is great. It feels awesome,” Loomis said. “Last week was rough, so to get back on the winning side of things feels good. Now we’ll regroup, watch film, work out and get ready for Buena.”
