The Middle Township High School football team will not play its scheduled game this weekend.
The Panthers were supposed to travel to Lindenwold to take on the Lions on Friday at 6 p.m. in a West Jersey Football League United Division contest.
Instead, Middle will receive a forfeit victory.
Lindenwold reportedly had a number of players ejected from its game against Buena last weekend after players from both teams were involved in some kind of confrontation late in the contest. As per NJSIAA rules, a player ejected from a football game must also serve a one-game suspension. Already low in numbers, Lindenwold has elected not to field a team this week.
Lindenwold had already forfeited a game earlier this month against West Windsor-Plainsboro after a slew of injuries left the team with a low number of available players. The Lions returned to the field for last weekend’s game against Buena, a 17-8 loss.
Buena also reportedly had a number of players ejected after the confrontation in last weekend’s game. The Chiefs are expected to suit up to play Pitman this weekend.
Middle, which lost 37-13 at Ocean City last weekend, will have its record moved to 4-4 overall, 4-0 in the WJFL United following the forfeit victory. The Panthers can clinch the United Division title with a win over Palmyra in its final regular-season game on Oct. 23 at home.
