WILDWOOD – Nolan Mawhinney and the Wildwood High School boys basketball team needed just a half second more.

Mawhinney’s 35-foot desperation heave that swished through the net was correctly judged by the officials to have been released just a moment too late as the Warriors fell, 55-52, to Cumberland in the Bernie McCracken Memorial Boys Bracket consolation game at the Boardwalk Basketball Classic Saturday morning.

Wildwood’s failure to secure the rebound of a missed Cumberland free throw with 4.9 seconds to go sealed its fate. After the Colts made another foul shot with 2.6 seconds to go, Wildwood inbounded quickly and got the ball to Mawhinney, who couldn’t get his shot off in time.

Brian Cunniff shot 12 for 22 from the field and scored a game-high 28 points for Wildwood (2-3) in the loss. Mawhinney chipped in 11 points.

Kaleb Green sank 20 points for Cumberland (1-5).
